Just had a look at the entry for this location, having been there last week (April 2008).
The best shot, in my opinion, is not illustrated - from the footbridge, in the morning, looking north. This shows trains running through the platform. The sun is on the right side until about lunchtime (it's a bit head-on by 1pm in summer), and is on the nose from about 9am. (Similarly, morning shots looking south - fig. 3 - have the sun on the nose until about 9am in summer, and perhaps slightly later if coming off the Darlington line; note that it's very easy to remove the compound visible in this view by changing the angle or using a longer lens.)
The footbridge has wire mesh, but several useful holes have been cut. However, if lots of people are there then ladders should be able to get you high enough to see over.
