New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Cragg Hall is in East Cleveland situated just to the north west of the Village of Carlin How, the nearest Town is Saltburn by the Sea about 4 mile, also to the North west. The line is a Freight only line serving the Cleveland Potash Mine and TaTa Steel.
Railway type and traffic
The line sports only Class 66 Locomotives in the Freightliner Livery hauling the JGA Naco Wagons to and from the Cleveland Potash Mine, the Steel movements at the moment are very few and far between and seem to run as and when required, occasionally a charter will run down the branch usually on a weekend, but once again does not happen very often. In reality you are looking at around 10 movements during daylight hours (summertime).
Environment
The actual photographic place this location covers is between a Pig Farm and a short row of wooden garages, then a row of Ex NER cottages, a path leads down to the Railway - remain on the path, do not tresspass on the railway - there is no formal boundary at this position so please abide by the rules of the railway.
Road directions
From Redcar follow the A174 signed Loftus, Skinningrove, until you enter the village of Carlin How, the location is on your left. From Whitby, once again follow A174 signed Loftus, once through the small Town of Loftus continue until you come to the Village of Carlin How, go through the village and the location is on your right as you leave it.

Parking
The best place to park your car is in the village - in a street, as parking near the location may possibly cause congestion, there are no official car parks, but you would be within 1 to 4 minutes walk of the location.
Public transport
Public Transport in the form of the Arriva Bus Company run through the village from towns like Middlesbrough, Redcar, Saltburn and Whitby - unfortunately I cannot give any service numbers.

Amenities
No Public Toilets exist, but there are 2 pubs and a club within the village! Eating, Carlin How has a very good chippy in the village (not hard to find by asking any passer by) and also during daylight hours a mobile Snack Bar is situated on the Working mans club Car Park + shops on the same row sell many types of Snacks, if a propper meal is required then Saltburn offers more in the way of traditional Cafe and restaurant facilities.
Accommodation
No known accommodation in the Village But Saltburn has 2 Hotels and various B&Bs that are easy to find.

Photographic notes
Photography and Videography is on a equal footing, only very early on or late on in the day is the Sun any problem, other than that Photography is ok for both directions, although Trains travelling from Cleveland Potash are quite near to your position, so a reasonable Telephoto /Zoom lens is recommended and take your pictures before it gets too close.
