Location notes
Situated a few miles to the south west of Whitby the Pickering to Grosmont line covers about 18 miles through some spectacular scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors national park. "The line is owned by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust who have run the line as a living museum since 1974" There are many different types of locomotive hauled passenger working both steam and diesel. With the occasional photographic freight charter or permanent way train. For more details see the North Yorkshire Moors Railway website.
Railway type and traffic
The trains are mostly steam hauled, with a diesel gala in spring and some diesel-hauled services on Summer Saturdays. The spring and autumn steam galas include some demonstration freight trains.
Environment
North Yorkshire is a beautiful part of the country with large rolling hills and amazing scenery. It is also very open and very exposed so weather here can be extreme at certain times of the year. Given the moors nature of the location it would be sensible to dress for the outdoors and expect the weather to change.
Road directions
From the A169 follow the signs for Goathland and continue through the village. Darnholm is signposted but... On your right is a large car park, take this turning and continue through the houses till you reach some cross roads turn right and continue down this road till you reach the location.

Parking
There is some parking before the bridge over the railway, after that there is space for a couple of cars across the ford.
Amenities
None at the location, but there are shops and pubs in Goathland.

Darnholm is a popular morning location. It is mid way on the climb from Grosmont to Goathland and as a result engines will be working quite hard at this point, making for excellent video and pictures. The location itself is a hillside facing east looking towards the line as it curves from west to south.
