New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Burngullow Junction is situated on the Cornish Mainline a couple miles west of St.Austell. It is where the freight only branch to Treviscoe and Parkandillack diverges and is also adjacent to the Blackpool Dryers china clay loading terminal.
Railway type and traffic
Passenger traffic consists of Virgin Voyagers and First Great Western HSTs with local services being class 150/153/158. The only loco hauled passenger train is the Sleeper service, which you can only shoot in the long summer days - It is booked to pass at 07:15 to Penzance and 22:48 to London!!
Charter trains are common as St.Austell is home to 'The Eden Project' and many tours to this location continue to Penzance.
Freight traffic is entirely class 66, anything else is a rarity.
Environment
The bridge over the junction is on a quiet country road with very little traffic. There is a row of houses to the east of the bridge, the locals seem friendly.
Road directions
From the A3058 St.Austell to Newquay road drive through the village of Trewoon and you will pass Blackpool China Clay Works on the left of the road and a Bardon Sand Terminal to the right, just after here there is a house on the left just before the turning you require. The road is signed 'Burngullow Lane' and the entrance is somewhat concealed, so drive slowly!!

Parking
Parking available both sides of the bridge, but park in tight as tractors form most of the traffic over the bridge!
Public transport
St.Austell station on the Cornish mainline has a good service and is approximately 2 miles away. An hourly bus service from St.Austell station to Newquay passes the end of Burngullow Lane.

Photographic notes
This location is best for 'up' trains (from Penzance) in the morning along with any traffic coming off the freight branch. In the afternoon light is poor for up trains. Down trains are only photographable in the sun after around 18:00.
There is currently a weekday freight trip that goes on to the branch at about 15:30 which works perfectly for the light.
Occasional noise from nearby farms otherwise very quiet and suited for videographers.
